Forty years in the making, the ninth edition of Management of Organizational Behavior is a readable text that makes behavioral sciences come alive through real life examples and progressive ideology.

Being an accomplished instructor, wouldn't you want a text from an author(s) at least equally as accomplished?

The professor is a master of their field and doesn't want to instruct from a textbook written by inferior scholars. Luckily for Pearson, three of the most knowledgeable minds in the field produced Management of Organizational Behavior.

-Paul Hersey is the chairman of the board and professor of Organizational Behavior and Management at California American University, Graduate School of Applied Behavioral Sciences. Hersey is also the founder and chairman of the board of the Center for Leadership Studies, Inc.

-Kenneth Blanchard is the chief spiritual officer of The Ken Blanchard Companies, a full-service global management training and consulting company that he founded in 1979 in San Diego.

-Dewey Johnson was elected to more than a dozen offices in national and regional professional associations, Dewey is a cofounder and former chair of the Management Education and Development Division, Academy of Management.

You might have read these authors when you were in school! The beliefs have not changed.

Almost 40 years ago; we introduced our first edition with the following statements, which we still believe:

“For a long time, management theory has been characterized by a search for universals-a preoccupation with discovering essential elements of all organizations. The discovering of common elements is necessary, but they do not really provide practitioners with “principles” that can be applied with universal success.”

This text believes that management theory is important to all categories of organizations-business, government, military, medicine, education, “voluntary” organizations such as the church, and even at home. The purpose is to identify a framework that's helpful in integrating independent approaches from these various disciplines to the understanding of human behavior and management theory.

-The belief is that an organization is a unique living organism whose basic component is the individual, and this individual is our fundamental unit of study. Thus, our concentration is on the interaction of people, motivation, and leadership.

Do some textbooks ever give the class a mock feel?

The classroom or lecture hall is the home base of a students learning, but it shouldn't feel counterfeit. The student should understand that the classroom is the bridge to the real world and should be treated as such. Hersey, Blanchard and Johnson use their real-world experience and create a “real” environment in their text. This text equips the reader in an authentic fashion, not the fantasy world-a real world where each of us has to understand the challenges of leading human organizations in a highly competitive environment.
