Also, no chapter relies on students reading the previous chapter so you can cover the material in whatever order you'd like.

NEW! Have students see MIS in action: Chapter-Opening Cases and Accompanying Movies. The chapter-opening cases and videos set up the chapter's content by providing an example of why the subsequent information is relevant in the real world. Cases include:
- FlexTime: Parts 1 and 2 of this text are tied together with a case using a fictional company called FlexTime. This case presents a successful business responding to contemporary challenges. It begins with one of the owners firing a new hire because that new hire does not possess fundamental MIS skills. The case continues to explore the need for collaboration and collaboration IS, difficult software decisions, the use of a database to prevent a bad decision, and the need for consumer-level knowledge about data communications.
- Fox River Golf Course: Parts 3 and 4 use the example of Fox Lake Country Club, a fictional successful business that attempts to increase its revenue by hosting weddings. Through this case students see how information silos can cause problems, user generated content can backfire, and use of club data for business intelligence becomes problematic.
Stimulate thought and discussion: Chapter Guides. Each chapter features two unique guides focused on the most relevant and current issues in IS. These guides encourage students to analyze different IS topics, while also stimulating class discussions on issues that may occur in the real world-including ethics.
Get students to identify and review the key concepts:
- Question-Based Format. Questions at the beginning of most chapter sections direct students to the concepts they should focus their attention on.
- Active Review. The Active Review-found at the end of each chapter and chapter extensions-provides students with an active assignment to check their understanding.
NEW! Provide hands-on practice in the classroom and beyond: MIS Projects, Cases, and Exercises.
- The MIS in Use cases lead to collaboration exercises at the end of each chapter.
- The Collaboration Exercises use Google Docs, Office Live Workspaces, Microsoft SharePoint, or other tools to help students practice the collaboration skills that will be important in the business world.
- NEW! MIS InClass. Each chapter of this text includes an Experiencing MIS InClass feature that contains exercises, projects, and questions for students to perform in class. Some of these exercises can be done in a single class period, while others span several class sections with out-of-class activities in-between. These exercises help students relate the chapter material to everyday life.
- NEW! The Application Exercises for Excel and Access 2010 ask students to solve business situations using spreadsheet (Excel) or database (Access) applications.
NEW! Give students a glimpse into the real world: Teaching Business Processes. Many students have little to no business experience and don't fully understand how business processes work. This edition showcases business processes in context to provide students with a basic understanding.
NEW! Highlight new topics: Theory of Social Capital. This edition teaches the concept of social capital, the valuation of social networks, and the role of information systems for increased social network value.
