Features |
RESEARCH MADE RELEVANT Kail accomplishes four main goals: Use effective pedagogy to promote students' learning. Use fundamental developmental issues as a foundation for students' learning of research and theory in child development. Teach students that developmental science draws on many complementary research methods, each of which contributes uniquely to scientific progress. Show students how the findings from child-development research can improve children's lives.
Modular Format - Each chapter consists of three or four modules that provide a clear and well-defined organization to the chapter. Each module begins with a set of learning objectives and a vignette that introduces the topics to be covered. (Ex. p. 41) MyVirtualChild, included within MyDevelopmentLab or sold as a standalone product, is an interactive simulation that allows students to raise a child from birth to age 18 and monitor the effects of their parenting decisions over time. By incorporating physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development at several age levels, MyVirtualChild helps students think critically as they apply their course work to the practical experiences of raising a virtual child. The program also provides students with feedback and includes observational videos to illustrate key concepts.
PERSONALIZE LEARNING WITH MYDEVELOPMENT LAB The new MyDevelopmentLab delivers proven results in helping students succeed, provides engaging experiences that personalize learning, and comes from a trusted partner with educational expertise and a deep commitment to helping students and instructors achieve their goals. MyVirtualChild, included within MyDevelopmentLab or sold as a standalone product, is an interactive simulation that allows students to raise a child from birth to age 18 and monitor the effects of their parenting decisions over time. The program also provides students with feedback and includes observational videos to illustrate key concepts. The Pearson eText lets students access their textbook anytime, anywhere, and any way they want-including listening online or downloading to iPad. A personalized study plan for each student, based on Bloom's Taxonomy, arranges content from less complex thinking-like remembering and understanding-to more complex critical thinking-like applying and analyzing. This layered approach promotes better critical-thinking skills, and helps students succeed in the course and beyond. Assessment tied to every video, application, and chapter enables both instructors and students to track progress and get immediate feedback. With results feeding into a powerful gradebook, the assessment program helps instructors identify student challenges early-and find the best resources with which to help students. An assignment calendar allows instructors to assign graded activities, with specific deadlines, and measure student progress. Class Prep collects the very best class presentation resources in one convenient online destination, so instructors can keep students engaged throughout every class.
IMPROVE CRITICAL THINKING Q & A - Questions on pertinent issues are posed to the student in the margins near the start of the related section. Answers are posted at the end of the section, after the student has had the opportunity to learn and think through the problem. (Ex. p. 45) Check Your Learning at the end of each section enables students to test their mastery of the material and prepare for quizzes. (Ex. p. 135) Open-ended Recall questions test students' understanding of material, Interpret questions assess their ability to think critically about material, and Apply questions encourage students to use material they've read. A personalized study plan for each student, based on Bloom's Taxonomy, arranges content from less complex thinking-like remembering and understanding-to more complex critical thinking-like applying and analyzing. This layered approach promotes better critical-thinking skills, and helps students succeed in the course and beyond. Interactive online resources like MyDevelopmentLab with MyVirtualChild, strong applications, and innovative pedagogy integrated throughout the text produce a meaningful learning experience for students. Open-ended Recall questions test students' understanding of material, Interpret questions assess their ability to think critically about material, and Apply questions encourage students to use material they've read. End of Chapter Summary provides a concise review of the entire chapter, organized by module and the primary headings within the module. (Ex. p. 103) End of Chapter Test - New to this 6th edition is a test at the end of every chapter which provides an opportunity for students to assess their understanding of the material presented in the chapter.(Ex. p. 137) MyVirtualChild, included within MyDevelopmentLab or sold as a standalone product, is an interactive simulation that allows students to raise a child from birth to age 18 and monitor the effects of their parenting decisions over time. By incorporating physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development at several age levels, MyVirtualChild helps students think critically as they apply their course work to the practical experiences of raising a virtual child. The program also provides students with feedback and includes observational videos to illustrate key concepts.
EXPLORE RESEARCH Unifying Themes at the very end of each chapter link the contents of the chapter to the developmental themes introduced in Chapter 1. (Ex. p. 135) Focus on Research boxes emphasize how real research is done. Through an engaging question-and-answer format, students are directed through the steps and decisions that were made for a particular research study. In addition, results are shown, usually with an annotated figure, so that students can learn how to interpret graphs. Closely examining specific studies demystifies research and shows that scientific work is a series of logical steps conducted by real people. (Ex. p. 226) Spotlight on Theories shows students the essential role that theories play in contemporary developmental science by examining an influential theory of development and showing how it has been tested in research. (Ex. p. 251) Guidelines for the most up-to-date research methods are included. Improving Children's Lives shows how research and theory can be applied to improve children's development. These practical solutions to everyday problems show the relevance of research and theory to real life. (Ex. p. 430) Child Development and Family Policy demonstrates how research has inspired change in social policies that affect children and families. From these features, students see that child-development research really matters. Parents, teachers, and policy-makers can use research to foster children's development and improve the lives of children and their families. (Ex. p. 338)
UNDERSTAND CULTURE AND DIVERSITY Cultural Influences shows how culture impacts children and illustrates that developmental journeys are diverse. All children share the biological aspects of development, but their cultural contexts differ. This feature celebrates the developmental experiences of children from different backgrounds. (Ex. p. 253)
