- Approximately 350 new applications have been added to the examples and the exercise sets. As with previous editions, the new applications are based on research and field interviews to ensure that they are authentic, topical, and unique.
- Another 75 of the existing applications have been revised to reflect current practices and updated information. Several outdated applied problems have been removed from the text.
- All chapter sections have been reorganized so that the applied examples now appear at the end of each section. With this structure, word problems can be given the special attention they warrant, and students can focus on learning the generic math skills before attempting the applications.
- The chapter-opening cartoons have been replaced with photographs depicting specific occupations. Below each photograph is a caption that either previews a special applied problem for that occupation or gives summary descriptions of several problems from the upcoming chapter that relate to the featured occupation.
- Several changes have been made to Chapter 5. Throughout the chapter, the “English system of units” is now referred to as the “U.S. Customary system”. In sections 5-2 and 5-3, more examples and problems have been added involving dosage calculations and conversions. Finally, in section 5-4, new material has been added on reading water meters, electric meters, ohmmeters, and dial gauges.
- Other minor additions include a more extensive coverage of averages in Chapters 3 and 7, and an expanded treatment of bar graphs in section 12-1 to include graphs in which bars contain multiple sections.
- The calculator appendix has been removed with the assumption that most students are now using the newer types of scientific calculators where calculations are entered exactly as they would be spoken or written.
- The title of Chapter 11 has been changed to “Intermediate Algebra” to more accurately describe the material in the chapter. The titles of sections 1-1, 7-5, and 8-2 have also been revised to better reflect the coverage of the concepts in those sections.
